Rake trim can be flat with no overhang or it can overhang the gable end like an eave.

For gabled roofs the roof rafters extending beyond the wall caps creating an angled roof overhang on the eaves. Extending a gable roof can be tricky since it involves working on the roof but you may be able to do it yourself if you only need to add 1 2 2 inches 1 3 5 1 cm. Due to the steeper angle of gable roof the maximum width of the eaves is narrower than other shed styles. The biggest problems with gable end overhang strength occur if your roof overhang is greater than about 12 inches.

The 6 inches of rigid insulation added to the top of the existing roof deck needed to be done in a manner that was invisible. That means you will have 4 of materials loss. However for larger extensions you ll need to hire a professional to get up there and remove large portions of the roof before extending the overhang. A rake on the gable end of the roof can be created with the construction of additional roof framing.

Gable end overhangs also known as rake overhangs extend all the way to the peak of the roof. For example if you had 10 0 of coverage then you would need a 10 4 piece of gable trim. If a truss roof is used with this method the gable truss is manufactured 3 shorter than the others.
